Final Fantasy VIII coming to PC in high definition

Famitsu reported that Square Enix is rereleasing VIII for PC with remastered, high resolution graphics. Details about possible changes to gameplay aside from updated graphics have not been revealed.

This follows the same treatment Final Fantasy VII got when Square Enix rereleased it in 2012. FFVIII was originally ported to PC in 1999, but was criticized for subpar graphics and buggy gameplay compared to the original Playstation version.

Mitsuto Suzuki, one of the co-composers for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, wrote on his Square Enix blog that he will be collaborating with Japanese group Language’s vocalist Kaori for the upcoming game’s soundtrack.

Suzuki is one of the three composers for Lightning Returns, along with Naoshi Mizuta and Masashi Hamauzu (the head composer). The three also worked on the soundtrack for Final Fantasy XIII-2. This time around, their music will be divided among the four continents of Nova Chrysalia, each region showcasing a different composer’s work.

Language’s music, which is largely ambient and instrumental-driven, can be sampled in the discography section of their website.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be available worldwide on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 later this year.

FF7 is awesome, one of the best of the entire franchise, and without a doubt deserves a remake (and should have been made years ago), but with the FFX/ FFX-2 remaster/remake, what are your opinions on it, on the actual game itself, and why?

FFX is in my top three favorites, along with VI and VIII. I like X-2 for what it was, and its battle system is my favorite in the series. As for the remaster bundle, it’s a 10th anniversary project and I’m not arguing with that because from a certain perspective it makes sense. As the first FF game of its console generation, X made as much of an impact on the series as IV did when FF went to the SNES, and VII when it went to the Playstation. It’s not like they’re remaking it from scratch, either. God, people still act like they are.

And calling VII awesome, one of the best in the franchise and deserving of a remake are all subjective and you can think that if want to. But honestly if it were up to me I wouldn’t bother with remastering or remaking anything and just let them all be. With the decision to remaster or remake something comes the issues of what do you change, what do you leave in, and most of all dealing with an entire fanbase crying about “Why that one I hate that one why not this one this one is better” regardless of how you try to rationalize your decision.

And I’d like to think we all know quite well how good the FF fanbase is with raising that last issue, good God.

Final Fantasy X is the first main series title which was not solely composed by Nobuo Uematsu; he enlisted the help of Junya Nakano and Masashi Hamauzu, both of whom have worked as proteges under him. Nakano’s work includes Front Mission: Gun Hazard (which he composed alongside Uematsu and Hamauzu) and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years; Hamauzu provided the bass vocals in “One Winged Angel” for Final Fantasy VII, and is the main composer for the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy.

For the three final bosses for Final Fantasy X, the three composed their own themes for each battle. Uematsu composed “Otherworld” (vocals by David Muir) for the battle with Braska’s Final Aeon (also played during the opening FMV).

Nakano composed “A Contest of Aeons” for the series of battles against Yuna’s summons, which contains motifs from “Hymn of the Fayth” as well as the normal boss theme “Enemy Attack,” the latter also composed by Nakano).

For the last fight against Yu Yevon, Hamauzu composed “Decisive Battle,” which also contains motifs from “Hymn of the Fayth” (co-composed by him and Uematsu) and the Thunder Plains’ location theme (also composed by him).

Honestly, this game was not all that great to warrant an HD remaster, let alone bundling it with FFX. Why not actually do the remake on FF7 instead of rehashing some of their bleh level properties or make something new that’s really different than what they have been doing lately? I mean come on!

Square Enix released the first screenshots of the HD remastered version of Final Fantasy X-2.

The remaster is part of its predecessor, Final Fantasy X’s, 10th anniversary of its original Playstation 2 release. The HD remasters of both games are of their International/PAL versions, featuring new gameplay features.

Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster will be available later this year for Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita. Both games will be bundled together for the PS3, while both will be sold separately for the Vita.

Masashi Hamauzu, the main composer for the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, tweeted from his independent studio Monomusik’s account that upon finishing composing the ending theme for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, he was so touchedit moved him to tears.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be available for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 worldwide later this year.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn scheduled for summer release

Square Enix confirmed the final version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will release worldwide this summer for Playstation 3 and PC after the third round of beta testing in June.

The PS3 and PC versions also will be cross-compatible with each other, allowing PS3 users to play with those on PC and vice-versa.

You shouldn’t have to get defensive about personally enjoying something. I’ve been attacked just because I am firm in my belief that it was a great game, and that’s just not appropriate.

I’m pretty much done with this “fandom” business. I want to be with other FF fans, not judgmental prudes.

In a recent web radio show hosted by Square Enix, Tetsuya Nomura appeared as a guest, where he briefly answered a question regarding a game that everyone has been waiting to hear about—Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Towards the end of the show, asked Nomura a number of questions from fans. One of the questions was about Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which Square Enix has been quiet about for over a year. Here’s the question and Nomura’s reply:

Q: I’ve been excitedly waiting for any news regarding Final Fantasy Versus XIII. When will we be hearing more?

Nomura: Any information about Versus is very… sensitive, even within the company. We’ve been quiet about it for the past year, but the day of being able to remove its information ban has already been decided, and we’re currently preparing for that day. When that time comes, we’ll also reveal our reason for the delay of any form of announcement.
